It’s an interesting question to ponder: What band could bring your country to a standstill?
For Canadians, the answer is simple: It’s the Tragically Hip.
A very interesting but sad event took place last Saturday in Canada. A couple of months ago, the vocalist of the most popular rock band, The Tragically Hip, Gord Downie, was diagnosed a terminal brain cancer. The tour was shortened and the group gave the last concert in their hometown. The gig was broadcasted in prime time by the biggest Canadian television (Olympic Games coverage was suspended).
From an expat point of view, it was an interesting experience to see how Canadians are able to unite in such a hard moment. Police tweeted that Canada will be unavailable for the rest of the world in the Saturday evening.
From coast to coast, people gathered in the streets and in the parks to watch together their music star on the bigger screens. Also the Prime Minister appeared in the crowd. The vocalist kindly asked him for further good care of the nation, wished everyone good life and, after three encores, left the scene for the last time.
